10 Things to Do in Philadelphia this WinterDon’t let the cold keep you away from exploring Philadelphia this winter. From outdoor festivals to inspiring art exhibits, you can experience the best Philadelphia has to offer no matter what the weather’s like. Here are 10 things to do in Philadelphia this winter that will keep you warm and entertained.

Old City

1. Celebrate the season at Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest

The Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest runs from late November until March 3rd, and features an impressive Olympic-size ice skating rink set against the Delaware River. If ice skating isn’t your thing, you can stroll through the beautiful winter gardens or get cozy in one of the warming cabins while enjoying delicious food and drink. There’s also a kid’s lodge with games and more, so the whole family can join in on the festivities.

2. Explore Black History Month at the National Constitution Center

All February long, The National Constitution Center is full of exceptional exhibits and interactive games that celebrate Black History Month. If you’re too late to catch the temporary exhibits, be sure to check out We The People, a permanent exhibition that showcases the achievements of African Americans.

3. Peruse local art on First Friday

Explore the local art scene every First Friday this winter in Philadelphia. Old City is the birthplace of Philadelphia’s First Friday tradition, and the neighborhood offers one of the best selections of independent art galleries in town. Galleries open their doors so the public can appreciate art in a casual and inviting atmosphere. Discover local talent, mingle with artists and enjoy free wine and snacks. First Friday isn’t just about appreciating art though, it’s also a time to explore the neighborhood, catch up with friends and meet Philadelphia creatives.

Rittenhouse Square

4. Get into the Irish Spirit on St. Patrick’s Day

Philadelphia knows how to throw a party, and St. Patrick’s Day is one of the best parties of the year. Besides numerous bar crawls, the city also puts on an elaborate parade that’s fun for Philadelphians of every age. This year’s parade takes place on March 10th. Catch the parade at its starting point just north of Rittenhouse Square before following it to the end at Penn’s Landing.

5. See medical oddities at the Mütter Museum

Halloween might be over, but the Mütter Museum is open all year round with its eerie displays of abnormal anatomy. This museum was founded by physician and Philadelphia native Thomas Mütter, and is full to the brim of medical oddities, preserved human remains and plaster casts to keep you both captivated and unsettled. The beautiful 18th century building that houses the museum is the perfect place to escape the winter cold, but it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.

6. Catch a show at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is Philadelphia’s premier center for local and visiting acts. The center features events all year round ranging from operas to circus performances. Home to the Philadelphia Orchestra, the center also serves as a place for touring companies and performers to showcase their talent. Check out the calendar this winter to find performances by immersive theatrical artist Shen Yun, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and visiting soloists and quartets.
